Trump Signs Executive Order Extending TikTok Enforcement Delay to June 19

Friday, April 4, 2025 · White House · GSM News

President Donald J. Trump signed Executive Order 14258 in Washington on April 4, 2025, again delaying enforcement of the TikTok ban: the enforcement delay that was set to expire on April 5 was extended by another 75 days, to June 19, 2025. During this period, the Department of Justice shall take no action to enforce the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act and shall impose no penalties on any entity for noncompliance with the Act.

Trump wrote on his social media platform that day: "My Administration has been working very hard on a Deal to SAVE TIKTOK, and we have made tremendous progress. The Deal requires more work to ensure all necessary approvals are signed, which is why I am signing an Executive Order to keep TikTok up and running for an additional 75 days." He added that he looked forward to working with TikTok and China to close the deal.

The ban stems from legislation passed by Congress in 2024: TikTok's parent company ByteDance was required to sell its U.S. operations by January 19, 2025, or the app would be barred in the United States. On January 17, 2025, the Supreme Court unanimously upheld the law. On the January 19 deadline day, TikTok went dark in the United States for about 14 hours before restoring service after Trump assured service providers they would not be penalized.

On his first day in office, January 20, Trump signed Executive Order 14166, delaying enforcement for 75 days until April 5; this was the second extension. According to the Associated Press, a plan for a group of American investors to take over TikTok's U.S. operations had come close to taking shape earlier that week but was put on hold after the Trump administration announced reciprocal tariffs on April 2 against China and other countries. ByteDance said that day that no agreement had been executed with the U.S. government, that key matters remained to be resolved, and that any agreement would be subject to approval under Chinese law.
