Boston Mayor Michelle Wu Sworn In for a Second Term

Monday, January 5, 2026 · States · GSM News

On January 5, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu was sworn in for a second term at Boston Symphony Hall. She had run effectively unopposed in the November 2025 election after her challenger dropped out following the preliminary election, securing re-election.

In her inaugural address, Wu reviewed her first-term record, including 4,200 affordable housing units completed and another 2,000 under construction, and pledged to keep advancing an agenda on housing, education, public safety and clean energy. She also criticized federal tariff and immigration policies as pressures on city governance. The Boston City Council was sworn in the same day and elected Liz Breadon as its president.

Wu was born in Chicago in 1985 to immigrant parents from Taiwan. A graduate of Harvard University and Harvard Law School, she served on the Boston City Council before her 2021 election as the city's first woman mayor, first mayor of color, and first Chinese-American mayor.
