CPSC Warns Consumers to Stop Using Liberty Trike Electric Tricycles Immediately: Tip-Over Risk in Turns, Six Falls Investigated

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a product safety warning on January 15, 2026, urging consumers to immediately stop using Liberty Trike 16-inch and 20-inch electric tricycles because they can tip over during turning, creating a risk of serious injury from falls. The risk is heightened on slopes or uneven surfaces.
CPSC has investigated six reports of falls involving the tricycles, with injuries including concussions, fractures and contusions. The warning covers all Liberty Trike 16-inch and 20-inch models, the numbers referring to wheel diameter. The tricycles are labeled "Liberty Trike" on the chain guard and "Electric Bike Technologies" on the stem tube.
About 7,490 of the tricycles were sold by Electric Bike Technologies, Inc., of Croydon, Pennsylvania, online at libertytrike.com from October 2015 to November 2025 for between $1,500 and $1,800. They were manufactured in the United States and Taiwan.
Unlike a typical recall, Electric Bike Technologies has not agreed to recall the tricycles and has represented that it is unable to afford to offer a remedy to consumers. CPSC therefore urges consumers to stop using the tricycles immediately and dispose of them, and not to sell or give them away. Incidents involving injury or product defects can be reported at SaferProducts.gov.
At the company's request, CPSC included its comments with the warning: electric tricycles, by their nature, have different turning dynamics than two-wheeled bicycles; during turning, weight shifts toward the outer wheel, which can increase the risk of tip-over if a turn is taken too sharply or at excessive speed, particularly on slopes or uneven surfaces. Liberty Trike said it emphasizes rider education and encourages all riders to operate tricycles cautiously, especially when turning. (Source: U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission)
