Lisa Lu, 99, Receives Lifetime Achievement Award at the Shanghai Film Festival

On June 13, at the opening night of the 28th Shanghai International Film Festival, 99-year-old Chinese-American actress Lisa Lu received the festival's Lifetime Achievement Award. By traditional Chinese age reckoning, she turns one hundred this year. During the festival she also appeared at a screening of the restored version of her 1968 classic 'The Arch,' drawing a long ovation.
Lu was born in Shanghai in 1927 into a Peking opera family; her mother, Li Guifen, was a celebrated opera performer. She studied at National Chiao Tung University in Shanghai before moving to the United States, where she studied business administration and drama at the University of Hawaii and trained at the Pasadena Playhouse, entering Hollywood in the late 1950s.
She is one of the pioneers among Chinese performers in Hollywood, familiar to audiences worldwide as the Empress Dowager Cixi in 'The Last Emperor,' as a mother in 'The Joy Luck Club,' and as Grandma Ah Ma in 'Crazy Rich Asians.' In 2025, at 98, she became the oldest person ever to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. (GSM, based on Variety and public reporting)
