Hayward Recalls About 4,600 Universal Pool Heaters Over Carbon Monoxide Hazard; Free In-Home Repair Offered

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced on September 17 that Hayward is recalling about 4,600 Universal-HC Series pool heaters (Recall No. 26-777). The gas pool heaters can produce high levels of carbon monoxide during operation, posing a risk of serious injury or death from carbon monoxide poisoning.
The recalled products are model HDFS400 Universal-HC Series dual-fuel gas pool heaters rated at 400,000 BTU. They are brown with a black top, measure about 21 by 28 by 31 inches and have a digital control display panel on top; the name plate below the vent reads "Hayward" at the bottom and model "HDFS400" at the top.
The heaters were manufactured by Hayward Industries, Inc., of Charlotte, North Carolina, and were sold from March through July 2026 through pool equipment distributors, pool builders and service professionals for about $5,600 each.
CPSC and Hayward urge consumers to stop using the recalled heaters immediately and to contact Hayward to schedule a free in-home inspection and repair by a qualified service technician, by calling 855-500-5288 or visiting the product recall page on Hayward's website.
