2027-28 FAFSA Fully Open: Education Department Launched Form Early on Sept. 23 Ahead of Oct. 1 Deadline

WASHINGTON, Oct. 1 — The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2027-28 academic year is fully open, according to the U.S. Department of Education. The form actually went live early, on September 23, the earliest public launch in the program's history, while October 1 remains the statutory opening date set by Congress under the FAFSA Deadline Act. Any student planning to attend a university, community college or career school in 2027-28 can now file at StudentAid.gov.

The FAFSA is the single gateway to federal grants, work-study and federal student loans, and most states and colleges also use the income and asset information it collects to award their own aid. According to the Education Department and the National College Attainment Network, some state and institutional funds are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, so earlier filing improves a family's position in line. This cycle also brings new federal borrowing caps and revised Pell Grant eligibility rules, making early estimates of aid especially important for planning.

Families applying under Early Decision should note a second date: the CSS Profile, used by many private colleges, opened on October 1 as well, and schools differ on which form they want first. The department advises students and parents to create their own StudentAid.gov accounts, complete identity verification, and use the contributor invite code so each contributor can fill in their section.
