Cruise's 'Digger' Tracking Soft Ahead of Oct. 2 Opening, Variety Reports

Tom Cruise's new film 'Digger,' directed by Oscar winner Alejandro González Iñárritu, was tracking toward a disappointing opening ahead of its Oct. 2 North American release, according to Variety, as reported by Men's Journal on Oct. 1. Projections had fallen to $12 million to $15 million for the opening weekend, down from earlier estimates of $18 million to $20 million, prompting speculation that the film could become the biggest box office bomb of 2026.
Early critical reaction was sharply divided. The Hollywood Reporter doubted mainstream audiences would sit through the film, Empire wrote that it seemed more concerned with itself than with viewers, and the New York Post singled out Cruise's performance; Deadline, by contrast, praised Iñárritu as one of the most original filmmakers working today.
'Digger' opened the same day as the Colleen Hoover adaptation 'Verity,' starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, which Boxoffice Pro projected would lead the weekend with $25 million to $35 million — a stark contrast in commercial prospects for the two releases.
