Iowa Lawmakers Eye Special Session on $15B Steel Plant Incentives

[DES MOINES] Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds announced October 1 she is considering calling a special legislative session to consider an incentive package for Mesabi Metallics' $15 billion steel plant project, the Associated Press reported. State lawmakers are set to vote October 2.
If built, the steel plant would be one of the largest industrial investments in Iowa history, promising thousands of construction and permanent jobs. The incentive package could include tax abatements, infrastructure support and workforce-training funds.
Reynolds said multiple states are competing for the project and Iowa must act quickly. Some lawmakers voiced caution about the package's size, demanding clear job-and-investment clawback provisions to protect taxpayers.
The vote outcome will be announced after the October 2 session.
