Curtis Bay Incinerator to Shut Down Under $600K Settlement

[BALTIMORE] The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) announced October 1 a settlement with the Curtis Bay waste incinerator: the facility will cease operations and pay a $600,000 penalty. The deal ends the operating history of a plant long targeted by neighboring communities over pollution complaints.
MDE said the settlement includes a strict shutdown timeline and site-remediation requirements. Community environmental groups welcomed the outcome as the fruit of years of advocacy, though some residents worry about how the region will fill the waste-processing gap after closure.
The department said it will oversee the entire shutdown to prevent pollutant spread and evaluate safe reuse options for the site.
