New Hampshire SNAP Benefits Rise Slightly in October as State Takes On More Operating Costs

Thursday, October 1, 2026 · States · GSM News

CONCORD, N.H. — Starting October 1, 2026, New Hampshire households receiving federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will see a small inflation-driven increase: the maximum monthly benefit rises by $8 for an individual and by $29 for a household of four, according to New Hampshire Public Radio. The adjustment is the U.S. Department of Agriculture's annual cost-of-living update to benefit levels.

October 1 also marks the start of new federal policies that reduce Washington's investment in food assistance, leaving New Hampshire's state government to absorb additional operating costs. The state Department of Health and Human Services said it is adjusting budgets and staffing to handle the added administrative burden and ensure eligible residents see no interruption in benefits.

SNAP is the nation's largest anti-hunger program, and tens of thousands of low-income New Hampshire families rely on it to buy food. Though modest, the increase offers real help to households coping with elevated prices. The state advises recipients with questions about their October benefit amounts to check the state benefits portal or call their local welfare office.

Federal SNAP rules are also tightening: under the 2025 budget reconciliation law, states must shoulder a larger share of program costs, and work requirements now apply more broadly. New Hampshire officials said they are closely watching how the federal changes affect both the state budget and recipients.
