New Mexico Asks Judge to Order Meta to Pay $35-40 Billion

Thursday, October 1, 2026 · States · GSM News

[SANTA FE] New Mexico asked a judge at an October 1 hearing to order Meta to pay $35 billion to $40 billion in damages, Reuters reported. The case stems from the state's allegations that Meta failed to adequately protect minors, exposing them to harmful content and sexual-exploitation risks.

The state attorney general's office alleged Meta knew its platforms posed risks to minors yet failed to act sufficiently. Meta denied the claims, saying it has invested heavily in youth-safety protections and questioning the basis for the damages figure.

The judge issued no ruling, saying further review of the evidence is needed. A win for the state would set a record damages figure for such cases. Lengthy litigation is expected.
