New Colorado River Water-Sharing Rules Begin October 1

[LAS VEGAS] New Colorado River water-sharing rules took effect October 1, WAMC and KJZZ reported. Against prolonged basin drought and sinking reservoir levels, the seven basin states and the federal government settled a new round of water-use cuts.
Nevada, a downstream user, will have its annual allocation governed by the new rules. The Southern Nevada Water Authority said conservation and recycling measures have prepared the region, and Las Vegas-area supply is secure in the near term.
Conservation groups urged states to save more; big agricultural users are watching compensation mechanisms. Implementation of the new rules will be reviewed annually.
