North Carolina Drops License Plate Stickers as Digital Vehicle Registration Begins Oct. 1

RALEIGH — Raleigh is a city in Wake County, North Carolina. North Carolina's move to digital vehicle registration took effect October 1, according to the state Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV), via DoRaleigh. Under the new system, the familiar year stickers on license plates are no longer issued, and printed registration cards are no longer automatically mailed at renewal; registration records are now kept and verified electronically.

The DMV stressed that dropping the sticker does not drop the obligations: owners must still complete safety and emissions inspections and pay registration fees and vehicle property taxes for a registration to be valid. Officers can check a vehicle's status through the electronic system. Officials said digitization cuts printing and mailing costs and avoids problems such as stolen stickers and lost cards.

Wake County, home to Raleigh, has a large vehicle fleet, and the DMV advised owners renewing soon to check its website and confirm their records are updated. Drivers who prefer paper can still request documentation as provided under the rules.

The DMV notes that renewals can be handled on its website, by mobile app or at local offices, and that driving on an expired registration can draw fines — owners should note their renewal month and complete inspections and payments on time. With stickers gone, roadside and parking enforcement will rely on electronic lookups; owners who spot an error in their record can verify it at a DMV office or through the official hotline. Digital registration is part of the agency's wider service overhaul, which has added license-appointment booking and online replacements in recent years with the stated goal of cutting office lines. Wake County is the state's most populous county, and the DMV said it has prepared for a surge of questions after the change, with an FAQ posted on its website.
