Murdaugh Defense Asks Judge to Compel Evidence Before Retrial

Thursday, October 1, 2026 · States · GSM News

[COLUMBIA] Attorneys for Alex Murdaugh — the South Carolina man convicted of murdering his wife and son — filed a motion October 1 asking the judge to compel prosecutors to turn over key evidence ahead of his retrial, the Greenville News reported. The defense says some evidence materials have not been fully disclosed.

Murdaugh's earlier murder conviction was set for retrial over jury-related issues. Defense lawyers said complete discovery is a prerequisite for a fair trial.

Prosecutors have not publicly responded to the motion. The judge is expected to rule on the compulsion request at an upcoming hearing; no retrial date has been set.
