Padres Sweep Cubs to Advance in Wild Card Round, Set Up NLDS Date With Brewers

The San Diego Padres swept the Chicago Cubs in the MLB Wild Card round that concluded Oct. 1, advancing to the National League Division Series against the Milwaukee Brewers, according to NBC Sports and Last Word on Sports. Chicago's top-of-the-order hitters were held in check throughout the short series by San Diego's pitching staff, the central reason for the Cubs' early exit.
For San Diego, outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. delivered a standout series; NBC Sports said he had taken his game to a new level in the Wild Card round. The Padres entered October as one of baseball's hottest teams and fed off their home crowd on the way to the sweep.
With Atlanta eliminating Philadelphia in a winner-take-all Game 3 the same day, the NLDS field was set: Padres against Brewers, and Braves against the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers. The Padres-Brewers series was scheduled to open Oct. 3 at American Family Field in Milwaukee.
Padres manager Craig Stammen drew praise for his pitching decisions in the short series, leaning on a bullpen carousel that never let Chicago's hitters settle into a rhythm. The Cubs, by contrast, head into the offseason facing questions about an aging lineup whose top hitters combined to bat under .200 for the series.
