Abbott Issues Disaster Declaration Over Diesel Prices

[AUSTIN] Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration over diesel prices, media including KWBU reported October 1. The declaration, signed Monday, September 28, invokes emergency mechanisms to cushion the trucking and farming sectors from soaring diesel costs.
The declaration lets the state relax travel and hours-of-service restrictions for freight vehicles during the emergency and coordinate in-state fuel supply. Trucking groups said diesel now makes up a major share of operating costs and the declaration should help stabilize supply chains.
Critics called the move a stopgap, urging longer-term fixes through tax and energy policy. The governor's office responded that disaster declarations are a standard tool for abnormal price swings.
