Immigrant Worker Protection Act I-9 Notice Rules Take Effect

[SEATTLE] New I-9 notice requirements under Washington's Immigrant Worker Protection Act took effect October 1, legal publisher JDSupra reported. Employers that receive a federal immigration I-9 inspection notice must now inform affected workers in writing within a set timeframe.
The rules also limit employers from granting immigration agents access to nonpublic work areas without a judicial warrant. Violating employers may face investigation and penalties from the state attorney general's office.
Labor-rights groups welcomed the law as filling the gap between federal enforcement and state worker protections; some employer groups asked the state for clearer compliance guidance.
