Wyoming Panel Weighs Workers' Comp for Volunteer Ski Patrollers

[CHEYENNE] The Wyoming Legislature's Joint Labor Committee met October 1 to consider extending workers' compensation coverage to volunteer ski patrollers, unofficialnetworks reported. The issue stems from cases where patrollers injured during rescues lacked adequate coverage.
Volunteer patrollers handle high-risk duties — rescues, avalanche control — at ski areas, but most currently have no workers' comp protection. Supporters argue patrollers perform a public-safety function and deserve employee-equivalent protection; opponents worry premium costs would fall on small ski areas.
The committee took no vote, opting to gather more input from ski-area operators and insurers, with a draft bill expected at a future meeting.
