Kennedy Center Honors Move to Capital One Arena Amid Demolition Fight
This year's Kennedy Center Honors will be held on December 7 at Washington's Capital One Arena, a Kennedy Center spokesperson said on October 2 — the first time since the awards began in 1978 that the ceremony will not take place in the center's Opera House.
The move comes as the Trump administration faces legal and congressional challenges over its plans to demolish the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the national performing-arts landmark opened in 1971 as a memorial to the slain president. A federal judge ruled last month that the administration must give at least 30 days' notice before taking any steps toward demolition, and members of Congress are weighing legislation to block the teardown. The center's board, largely appointed by President Trump, previously voted to add his name to the facility.
The Honors, among the most prestigious American awards for lifetime achievement in the performing arts, will announce this year's honorees at a later date. Capital One Arena, home of the NBA's Wizards and the NHL's Capitals, seats roughly 20,000.
