Friday, October 2, 2026 · States · GSM News

Former U.S. Rep. Patricia Saiki died September 30 at age 96, Hawaii's state government announced. Gov. Josh Green ordered flags statewide to half-staff from October 2 through October 5 in her honor.

Saiki, a leading Hawaii Republican, represented the state in Congress from 1987 to 1991 — then among the few Asian American women in the House — and later led the Small Business Administration.

Gov. Green praised Saiki's lifetime of public service, calling her one of Hawaii's proudest daughters. Leaders of both parties issued tributes recalling her bipartisan, pragmatic, and gracious style.

Memorial arrangements will be announced. Saiki's family thanked the public for its kindness and said services will be simple, in keeping with her wishes.
