'Turning My Mum Into Me' Goes Viral: Mother-Daughter Wardrobe Swap Videos Draw Hundreds of Millions of Views

Friday, October 2, 2026 · Society · GSM News

According to an October social media trends roundup published by Startups.co.uk on October 1 and summarized by outlets including Under30CEO, a format called Turning My Mum Into Me became one of TikTok's biggest family trends in early October. Creators bring a family member on camera and dress them in their own full outfit — the same jeans, crop top and accessories — and the warm, comic contrast when a mother wears her daughter's wardrobe builds to a final reveal.

The roundup said the format has already drawn an audience in the hundreds of millions on TikTok. The barrier to entry is minimal — one phone, one outfit, one swap — and comment sections filled with lines such as claims that the mum looks more stylish than the daughter, or that the pair look like sisters. Brands and small shops quickly adopted the same format to show how clothes look on different people.

Other October formats in the same roundup include Some People Call Me, which uses a nickname as the setup for a pitch; One Question, One Word, which layers a single-word answer from friends or a chatbot over visuals; and That's So You, a photo collage of someone's quirks. Analysts said the family-and-everyday-life flavour of these trends fits the platform's broader shift from fantasy toward realism this year.
