Black Bear Attacks 2 People Near Salmon, Idaho; Bear and Companion Euthanized

A black bear attacked two people near Salmon, Idaho, in the early hours of October 2, sending both to hospitals, the New York Post and Idaho Fish and Game said.
The pair encountered the bear outdoors when it charged, inflicting bite wounds. Wildlife officers later tracked down the bear and its companion and euthanized both per state policy, testing them for rabies and other diseases.
Idaho Fish and Game said bears that attack people must be euthanized under state policy — standard practice nationwide to prevent repeat attacks. Samples from the euthanized bears will be tested to rule out disease.
Officials reminded residents that bear activity is high across Idaho's mountains; hikers should carry bear spray, secure food and trash, and avoid dense woods alone at dawn and dusk. Both victims are in stable condition and remain hospitalized.
