Ocean City Fire Department Responds to Multiple Water Rescues Amid Drowning Incidents

Friday, October 2, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Ocean City, Maryland, fire department responded to multiple drowning-related rescues on October 2, with lifeguards and firefighters pulling several distressed swimmers from the surf, Delmarva Now reported.

Officials said heavy surf and heightened rip-current risk coincided with some visitors swimming outside guarded hours or areas. Some of those rescued were taken to hospitals for observation; no life-threatening reports were issued.

Ocean City is Maryland's best-known beach resort, drawing millions of visitors a year. Even in fall, weekends still bring beachgoers and surfers. The department noted that autumn surf is changeable and rip currents can be harder to spot than in summer.

With fall reducing lifeguard coverage — shorter hours and smaller zones — the department urged visitors to swim only in guarded areas, check daily surf-warning flags before entering the water, and, if caught in a rip current, stay calm and swim parallel to shore to escape.
