Maine Absentee Voting Begins as 70,000+ Voters Request Early Ballots

Friday, October 2, 2026 · States · GSM News

Maine's absentee voting for the 2026 general election began on October 2, EIN Presswire reported. The state allows no-excuse absentee voting: any registered voter may request a mail ballot or vote early in person. More than 70,000 voters had already requested absentee ballots as in-person absentee voting opened.

The Secretary of State's office said voters may apply online, by mail, or in person at municipal offices through October 29. Voters who requested ballots are urged to return them early so they arrive before the 8 p.m. Election Day deadline on November 3.

Maine is among the early adopters of no-excuse absentee voting, and the share of mail and early ballots has risen steadily in recent cycles. Election officials say absentee voting gives working people, students, seniors, and voters with disabilities a convenient alternative that lifts overall turnout.

Maine will elect a U.S. senator, two House members, and a governor in the 2026 midterms, drawing national attention. Election officials remind voters to plan ahead and track ballot status and polling-place information on the Secretary of State's website.
