Quarry Road 2 Fire Burns 26 Acres Near Shallotte; Middle School Dismisses Early
A wildfire dubbed the Quarry Road 2 Fire burned about 26 acres near Shallotte, North Carolina, on October 2, sending smoke over nearby neighborhoods, the StarNews reported.
A local middle school dismissed students early as a precaution, with bus routes adjusted. Fire crews and forestry personnel attacked the blaze and cut containment lines to keep it from spreading toward homes.
Forestry officials said the cause is under investigation; dry, windy conditions complicated suppression efforts. North Carolina's coastal plain is entering its fall fire season, when leaf litter and gusty winds make ignition easy.
Residents were urged to avoid outdoor burning and clear flammables from around yards. The fire is now preliminarily contained, with crews remaining on scene to monitor for flare-ups.
