New Jersey AG Petitions Supreme Court to Review Ruling Striking Down Semi-Automatic Gun Ban

New Jersey's attorney general petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court on October 2 for certiorari, seeking review of a Third Circuit ruling that struck down the state's ban on certain semi-automatic firearms, the Daily Caller and the Firearms Policy Coalition reported.
The Third Circuit had held that New Jersey's ban on sales of specified semi-automatic rifles violates the Second Amendment. The AG's petition argues the ban is a reasonable public-safety regulation consistent with the Supreme Court's recent precedents.
Whether the Court takes the case will have far-reaching implications for similar gun laws in multiple states. Gun-rights groups said they will file amicus briefs urging the Court to let the appellate ruling stand, while gun-control advocates urge the Court to take the case and reverse.
New Jersey has among the strictest gun laws in the nation, with its assault-weapons ban on the books for more than three decades. Legal scholars note the Supreme Court's Second Amendment jurisprudence has expanded in recent years; if granted, the case could become a landmark defining how far states may go in regulating firearms.
