Skanska Wins $271M Contract for Coast Guard Homeport Pier at Naval Station Newport

Friday, October 2, 2026 · States · GSM News

Construction firm Skanska announced October 2 it has signed a $271 million contract to build homeport pier facilities for the U.S. Coast Guard at Naval Station Newport in Rhode Island, PRNewswire reported.

The project will provide berthing and support facilities for the Coast Guard's new generation of patrol cutters, ranking among the larger military construction projects at the Newport base in recent years. Work includes the pier structure, breakwaters, shore-power systems, and logistics buildings, and is expected to create substantial local construction jobs.

Naval Station Newport is a key Navy training and logistics installation and an important Coast Guard homeport on the Atlantic coast. As new cutters join the fleet, upgrading homeport infrastructure has become a priority, and the new pier will accommodate larger vessels.

Skanska said construction will begin soon and the contract is booked in fourth-quarter orders. Rhode Island officials welcomed the project, saying it cements the state's role in the defense industry and boosts the local economy and employment.
