Colton: Police peacefully resolve armed mental-health crisis through negotiation
Colton is a city in San Bernardino County, California. Colton police officers responded on October 2 to reports of a man armed with a handgun who was in mental-health crisis and expressing intentions of self-harm. Officers confirmed the man was in crisis and used crisis negotiation and de-escalation tactics over an extended period, with support from neighboring law enforcement agencies, persuading him to surrender peacefully. No one was injured.
The department said the outcome demonstrates the effectiveness of crisis intervention training for front-line personnel responding to behavioral health emergencies.
