Tennessee Governor Orders Probe of Botched Execution; AG Follows Up

Friday, October 2, 2026 · States · GSM News

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee on October 2 ordered a full investigation into the botched execution of death-row inmate Christa Pike, with Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti following up, WVLT reported.

Pike is among the youngest women on Tennessee's death row. A technical failure disrupted the execution protocol, raising questions about the state's compliance with its lethal-injection procedures.

Lee said the probe will review the execution team's operations, drug and equipment handling, identify the cause, and recommend fixes. Independent experts will lead the inquiry to ensure impartial findings.

No further executions will be scheduled until findings are released. Tennessee has seen multiple controversial executions in recent years, and the incident has once again thrust the administration of the death penalty into the spotlight.
