5 Texas Community Colleges Win Workforce Pell Eligibility Plus $10.4M Federal Grant

Friday, October 2, 2026 · States · GSM News

Gov. Greg Abbott announced October 2 that five Texas community colleges have earned federal Workforce Pell eligibility, alongside a $10.4 million U.S. Department of Labor grant for job training, EIN Presswire reported.

Workforce Pell extends Pell Grant coverage to short-term career-training programs, helping students afford tuition and certification costs. Traditional Pell Grants largely covered degree programs, leaving short-term certificate students out.

The governor's office said the move will channel more Texans into high-demand fields and ease skilled-worker shortages. With Texas's economy still growing, healthcare, manufacturing, and construction all face hiring crunches, and career training is seen as key to the labor shortage.

The colleges will offer short-term certificates in nursing, advanced manufacturing, IT, and other fields; grant funds go to curriculum, equipment, and job-placement services, with the first courses expected to enroll next spring.
