Eastern Connecticut State University Welcomes Largest Freshman Class in School History

Saturday, October 3, 2026 · States · GSM News

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. — Eastern Connecticut State University is celebrating a record-breaking start to the academic year. The campus newspaper, the Campus Lantern, reported on Oct. 3 that the university's fall 2026 freshman class numbers 1,146 students — the largest in school history.

Administrators said the record enrollment reflects the university's investments in academic programs, campus facilities and student services. Eastern, the liberal arts university of the Connecticut State University system, is known for small classes and undergraduate-focused teaching, and has continued to draw students from across Connecticut and neighboring states.

To welcome its biggest class ever, the school rolled out a full slate of orientation activities to help freshmen settle into college life. Officials added that they will keep a close eye on student-faculty ratios and housing and course capacity to protect teaching quality as enrollment grows.

At a time when many U.S. colleges face demographic headwinds and shrinking freshman classes, Eastern's growth stands out — and offers a model for peer regional public universities.
