WASHINGTON, Oct. 3 — U.S. colleges and universities reported 5,799 rapes in 2024, according to a New York Post review of federal and state campus crime data. The University of Utah in Salt Lake City recorded the most, with 146 reported rapes, nearly double the next-highest school; 122 of the alleged attacks took place in dorms, 18 in other campus buildings and six on off-campus property run by the school or a student organization. The public university enrolls about 36,894 students.

The University of Colorado Boulder followed with 96 reported rapes, then Ohio State University with 67, Penn State with 57, UCLA with 52, UC Santa Cruz with 46 and UC Santa Barbara with 43. In New York, where state rules require colleges to combine sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence and stalking into one tally, Columbia University reported 262 incidents of sexual violence in 2024, the highest in the state, including 21 reported on-campus rapes, all in residence halls.

The figures come from annual campus safety statistics compiled by the U.S. Department of Education under the Clery Act and from New York state reporting. The Post analysis also found Columbia investigated a low share of its incidents through the formal Title IX process. Federal law requires colleges to publish their annual security reports by October 1, and families can look up each school's data on the department's campus safety website. All figures are reported incidents, not court convictions.
