Georgia Suspends Motor Fuel Taxes Through Oct. 29 Amid Petroleum Supply Emergency

ATLANTA — The Georgia Department of Revenue has suspended state motor fuel taxes from Sept. 29 through Oct. 29 in response to a petroleum supply emergency, Bloomberg Law reported. During the suspension, gasoline and diesel sold at the pump are exempt from state fuel taxes, saving drivers tens of cents per gallon.
The state declared an emergency after petroleum supply disruptions tightened fuel availability and pushed prices higher in parts of the state. Suspending the fuel tax is aimed at directly easing pain at the pump. The revenue department said distributors and retailers must adjust tax collection accordingly during the suspension, with state oversight of compliance.
Georgia's motor fuel tax runs tens of cents per gallon, and the month-long pause is expected to save drivers statewide a significant sum. Consumer advocates welcomed the move, saying any relief matters while fuel prices run high.
The department noted the suspension ends Oct. 29, after which normal collection resumes. The state said it will keep monitoring supply conditions and take further steps if needed to keep fuel flowing.
