Chicago Homicides at 328 So Far This Year, Down 5 From Last Year, as Trump Renews Federal Intervention Talk

Saturday, October 3, 2026 · States · GSM News

CHICAGO — Through Oct. 3, Chicago has recorded 328 homicides this year, five fewer than the same point last year, Newsmax reported, citing Chicago Tribune data. Despite the slight decline, gun violence remains a grave challenge for the city.

Former President Donald Trump has renewed talk of federal intervention to address Chicago crime, drawing pushback from local officials. The mayor and the Illinois governor have repeatedly opposed federal law enforcement stepping in without local consent, arguing that fighting crime requires community policing and social investment, not a federal takeover.

While homicides are down from the peaks of recent years, shootings continue on a weekly basis, concentrated in summer months and holiday weekends. Police say thousands of illegal guns have been seized this year and patrols beefed up in high-crime corridors.

Public safety ranks among voters' top concerns in Chicago and is set to be a flashpoint in upcoming local elections. Community groups urge pairing enforcement with investment in youth jobs, mental health and neighborhood programs to attack the roots of violence.
