Sherwood Township Volunteers Plant 20 Trees to Replace Ones Lost to Tornadoes

Saturday, October 3, 2026 · States · GSM News

SHERWOOD TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Volunteers rolled up their sleeves on Oct. 3 to plant 20 new trees in Sherwood Township, replacing ones destroyed by tornadoes in 2024 and 2026, thedailyreporter reported on Oct. 7.

The two tornadoes toppled scores of trees across the township and surrounding areas, scarring the local landscape. Residents organized the community planting to take advantage of the fall season, setting saplings in public green spaces and along roadsides. Volunteers dug holes, set seedlings and watered them in an cheerful, well-coordinated effort.

Organizers said the 20 new trees represent a mix of species chosen for both beauty and ecological value, and will gradually restore the town's canopy. Township officials thanked the volunteers and pledged ongoing care to help the saplings thrive.

With extreme weather striking Michigan communities with growing frequency, Sherwood Township's small planting project showcased the community's resilience in recovery — and offered an example for other storm-hit towns.
