Caterpillar Plans $1 Billion Expansion of Sanford Plant, Adding at Least 1,950 Jobs

SANFORD, N.C. — Heavy equipment giant Caterpillar plans to invest $1 billion expanding its Sanford, North Carolina plant, creating at least 1,950 new jobs, Area Development reported on Oct. 3. The project ranks among the largest manufacturing investments in the region in recent years.
The Sanford facility is a key Caterpillar production base in the Southeast. The expansion will significantly boost capacity, with new positions spanning production, engineering and management. Lee County officials said the project will have far-reaching effects on the local economy, from supply chains to real estate.
North Carolina has been a standout in attracting manufacturing investment, thanks to competitive operating costs, strong transportation networks and workforce resources. The state commerce department said incentive support will back the expansion.
The local community has broadly welcomed the plan, seeing it as a chance for young people to build careers close to home. Construction and production timelines will be announced later.
