Oklahoma County Jail Inmate Found Unresponsive Dies

OKLAHOMA CITY — An Oklahoma County jail inmate found unresponsive on Oct. 3 later died, The Oklahoman reported on Oct. 4. The deceased was identified as Lloyd Woodson Smith, discovered during a routine check by detention officers who immediately called for medical help.
Jail medical staff responded quickly and Smith was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office has opened an investigation per protocol, and the medical examiner will determine the cause of death. In-custody deaths are also subject to independent state-level review.
The Oklahoma County jail has seen multiple detainee deaths in recent years, with conditions and medical care repeatedly criticized. Civil rights advocates and families have long called for better medical services and health monitoring for those in custody.
The sheriff's office said it will fully cooperate with the investigation and release more details once the medical examiner's findings are complete. The investigation continues.
