Albany Woman Dies in Linn County Jail Custody; State Review Underway

Saturday, October 3, 2026 · States · GSM News

ALBANY, Ore. — Bobbie Jo Allen, an Albany woman, died in Linn County Jail custody in the early hours of Oct. 3, the Statesman Journal reported on Oct. 6. Jail staff found Allen unresponsive during a routine check; resuscitation efforts failed.

The Linn County Sheriff's Office said Allen had been held on pending charges, and the exact cause of death awaits the medical examiner's findings. Under Oregon rules, in-custody deaths must be reported to state authorities and undergo independent review to ensure a fair and transparent investigation.

Allen's family expressed shock and demanded a full accounting of how she died. Civil rights advocates following the case urged jail systems to strengthen health monitoring of detainees, especially those with medical histories or special needs.

In-custody deaths at Oregon jails have fueled public debate over jail medical care in recent years. The sheriff's office said it will fully cooperate with the investigation and release findings when available.
