Pennsylvania Hunter Takes Caribou-Like Bull Elk on Opening Day of New October Season

ERIE, Pa. — Opening day of Pennsylvania's new October elk season produced a trophy for the ages. Hunter Jacob Kieffer took a massive bull elk on Oct. 3 that fellow hunters nicknamed "Caribou" for its caribou-like antlers, goerie reported on Oct. 6.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission added the October season this year, giving elk-tag holders an extra hunting opportunity. Kieffer spotted the bull on the morning of opening day; its wide, symmetrical rack and heavy frame impressed even seasoned hunters. Under state rules, harvested elk must be registered and checked.
Northwestern Pennsylvania is home to one of the largest wild elk herds in the eastern United States, centered on Elk County, drawing wildlife watchers from across the country each year. The Game Commission manages the hunt through a tightly limited lottery tag system to keep the herd sustainable.
Kieffer wasn't alone — several other hunters reported taking impressive bulls on opening day. The season satisfies hunter demand while bringing seasonal dollars to the region's rural economy.
