Raleigh's Greenway System Marks 50 Years With Nature Walks, Exhibits and Volunteer Days

RALEIGH — Raleigh is a city in Wake County, North Carolina. Raleigh's greenway system turns 50 this year, and the city is marking the milestone with a series of October events. According to the City of Raleigh, via DoRaleigh, a guided nature walk was held on October 3 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Wilkerson Nature Preserve, introducing residents to the ecology along the trails.
The celebration also includes a pop-up greenway exhibit at the city museum from October 2 to 22, a lecture on October 6, a reception on October 8 and volunteer days on October 9 and 10. Begun in the 1970s, Raleigh's greenways now link parks, rivers and neighborhoods across the city and are a primary space for cycling, running and time in nature — a signature feature of the 'City of Oaks.'
Officials said five decades of expansion have made the network part of Raleigh's quality of life. Most anniversary events are free, with registration details and meeting points listed on the city's website.
Raleigh's Capital Area Greenway system runs for more than 100 miles along the Neuse River, Crabtree Creek and other waterways, linking more than 60 parks and many neighborhoods; many segments double as cycling commutes, and the city treats the network as green infrastructure alongside roads and transit. The parks department says maintenance relies on the city budget and a large volunteer corps, and the anniversary volunteer days will tackle trail cleanup and planting, with sign-ups on the city website. The museum pop-up will show archival photos and early plans tracing the system's growth from a single 1970s riverside path to today's citywide web. Officials said future extensions will prioritize closing gaps between neighborhoods so more residents can reach a trail on foot.
