Brewers Edge Padres 3-2 in NLDS Opener as Ninth-Inning Roof Play Seals Win

The Milwaukee Brewers opened the National League Division Series with a dramatic 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres at American Family Field on Oct. 3, the Associated Press reported. Catcher William Contreras hit the tiebreaking home run in the seventh inning to put Milwaukee ahead for good.
The game's defining moment came in the ninth. With a runner on first and one out, San Diego's Ty France drove a ball at 105.3 mph with a 49-degree launch angle that appeared headed for a go-ahead homer — until it struck a cable on the stadium roof and dropped into left fielder Jackson Chourio's glove on the warning track. Under the park's ground rules, a fair ball hitting the roof or its cables remains live and can be caught for an out; the Padres' challenge failed. Chourio also hit a two-run homer in the third inning that tied the game.
San Diego had scored twice in the second before Milwaukee answered in the third. Game 2 was scheduled for Oct. 4 in Milwaukee, with the Padres facing a possible 0-2 hole before the series shifted to San Diego.
The loss stung for San Diego: the Padres scored first, were caught and passed, then saw a potential go-ahead homer in the ninth swallowed by the stadium roof. In a best-of-five, though, dropping the opener on the road is survivable — provided the Padres answer in Game 2 before the series moves to San Diego. Milwaukee, owner of the league's best regular-season record, simply looked the part.
