Yellowstone Draws 3.49 Million Visits in First Eight Months, Near Record Pace

Saturday, October 3, 2026 · Culture & Travel · GSM News

Yellowstone National Park recorded 3,491,850 recreation visits from January through August 2026, according to National Park Service figures — about 1.6% below the same period in 2025, 2.8% below the record year of 2021, and almost identical to 2024's 3,494,350. The park also logged its busiest May on record, with more than 570,000 visits, keeping a fourth straight year above four million annual visits within reach.

The traffic is an economic engine for gateway communities across Wyoming, Montana and Idaho: Yellowstone tourism is estimated to generate $600 million to $800 million a year for nearby towns, as visitors spend on hotels, fuel, restaurants, guided tours and retail along their routes.

Eastern Idaho communities such as Island Park, Idaho Falls and Rexburg, though home to no park entrance, benefit as lodging and road-trip bases for travelers entering from the west. Park officials reminded autumn visitors to check weather and road-closure updates as the peak season winds down.

The park also reminded visitors that autumn weather in Yellowstone changes fast: geyser-basin boardwalks and high-elevation roads can close temporarily for snow, and conditions should be checked before setting out. Hotels in gateway towns kept high weekend occupancy into October, showing the park-plus-small-town road trip still draws well into the shoulder season.
