Amtrak Adds Fourth Car to Every Borealis Train Starting Oct. 3, Adding 60 Seats

Saturday, October 3, 2026 · States · GSM News

MILWAUKEE — Amtrak's Borealis service between Milwaukee and St. Paul is getting bigger. Starting Oct. 3, every Borealis train carries a fourth car, adding about 60 seats per trip, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on Oct. 9.

The Borealis has run with consistently high ridership since its launch, frequently selling out on weekends and holidays. Amtrak said the extra capacity will ease crowding at peak times and give passengers a more comfortable ride.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation welcomed the move, calling the Wisconsin–Twin Cities corridor a Midwest intercity rail success story. The state has continued to invest in passenger rail, and Borealis ridership has exceeded expectations.

The added coaches have completed inspection and are now in daily service, Amtrak said. Riders can check availability and buy tickets on Amtrak's website or mobile app.
