Dunleavy Proclaims Oct. 4-10 Alaska Winter Weather Preparedness Week

JUNEAU — Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy signed a proclamation Oct. 4 declaring Oct. 4-10, 2026, as Alaska Winter Weather Preparedness Week, urging residents to prepare before winter arrives.
The proclamation notes Alaska winters bring blizzards, avalanches, black ice, freezing rain and dangerous wind chills. The state urges residents to: winterize vehicles (snow tires, antifreeze, emergency kits); stock food, water and warm supplies at home; keep flashlights, spare batteries and a NOAA weather radio ready; and check forecasts and road conditions — and tell someone their plans — before traveling.
The state emergency management division said it will share preparedness tips through social media and community events during the week. Winter preparedness guides are available on the state website.
Alaska winters typically begin in late October, with snow arriving earliest in the Interior and northern regions. The state urges residents not to wait for the first blizzard to get ready.
