Iowa Democrats Chip Into GOP Voter Registration Lead for Sixth Straight Month

DES MOINES — With a month to go until November's midterm elections, Iowa Democrats continue to chip away at Republicans' massive lead in active voter registrations, according to Oct. 1 data from the Iowa Secretary of State's office. The state has 713,305 active registered Republicans, about 180,000 more than the 533,238 Democrats; no-party active voters number 572,152.
At the start of 2026, Republicans enjoyed an advantage of nearly 200,000 — part of a broader rightward shift since 2009. Democrats have now whittled the margin to around 180,000, with October the sixth consecutive month of voter-registration data shifting left — the party's most consistent series of gains since early 2020.
The Secretary of State's office will release one more voter-registration update before Election Day. Key dates: early voting begins Oct. 14, when county auditors can begin mailing absentee ballots; written absentee requests must reach county auditors by Oct. 19, also the pre-registration deadline — though Iowans can still register in person on Election Day.
While Republicans will almost certainly keep a six-figure registration lead, several key races are competitive, and a Suffolk University poll taken Oct. 1-4 showed Democrats seeing opportunities in the Senate and governor's races.
