Mississippi Redistricting Hearings Conclude in Jackson on Oct. 1 After Eight Sessions

Sunday, October 4, 2026 · States · GSM News

JACKSON — The Mississippi Joint Committee on Reapportionment and Redistricting held its final public hearing Oct. 1 at the State Capitol in Jackson, closing more than a month of hearings around the state. Since Aug. 18, the committee held eight hearings in Tupelo, Cleveland, Hattiesburg, Gulfport, Meridian, Brookhaven, Grenada and Jackson, drawing more than 80 speakers.

At the Jackson finale, State Auditor Shad White urged the committee to move forward with redistricting and criticized the current district of U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson. Supporters argued the current lines dilute Black voting strength, particularly in the 2nd Congressional District; opponents warned that redrawing could trigger new lawsuits.

The committee has not released any new district map drafts. It plans to compile public testimony from the hearings before deciding whether to propose new lines.

The hearings are part of Mississippi's post-2020 Census redistricting discussion, shaping federal and state legislative elections for the next decade.
