Armstrong Presents Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Awards to Wrestling Twins, the Steiners

BISMARCK — North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong presented the Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award on Oct. 1 to twin brothers Terry and Troy Steiner in Memorial Hall at the State Capitol — the highest honor North Dakota bestows on its citizens.
Born in Bismarck, the Steiners became high school wrestling legends at Bismarck Century: Troy won three state titles from 1986-88, and Terry won back-to-back titles in 1987-88. The brothers went on to wrestle for the University of Iowa Hawkeyes, with Troy winning the 1992 NCAA national championship and Terry the 1993 title, and both later joined the U.S. National Team.
Presenting the award, Armstrong said the Steiners were not only champions but role models who "brought great honor to North Dakota," serving as coaches and wrestling ambassadors for more than 40 years. More than 300 wrestling community members and citizens attended the ceremony. The Rough Rider Award, established in 1961, honors North Dakotans of exceptional achievement in their fields.
