New Hampshire Governor Race: Warmington Presses Ayotte on Tariffs

EXETER — Democratic gubernatorial candidate Cinde Warmington said during a September 30 visit to Exeter businesses that if negotiations with the federal government over tariffs fail, she would "absolutely" sue the federal government as governor, criticizing incumbent Republican Gov. Kelly Ayotte for not taking the same position.

Warmington said 99% of New Hampshire businesses are small businesses, tariffs are driving up their costs and tourism has declined. She noted that 25 states sued the Trump administration over tariffs in the U.S. Court of International Trade on August 3, adding that "other governors are standing up and fighting back, and I would stand up and fight back as governor."

Ayotte responded on October 1 that she has long opposed tariffs on Canada because "they simply are not good for New Hampshire," urging the administration to resolve the dispute with one of the state's largest trading partners quickly. The two face off November 3. A Saint Anselm College poll of 1,042 likely voters conducted September 28-29 showed Ayotte leading Warmington 52% to 45%.
