Trump Endorses GOP's Cunningham in NM-2 with Video: 'Hello, New America, Formerly New Mexico'

SANTA FE — President Donald Trump released a video Oct. 3 endorsing Republican Greg Cunningham in New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District against incumbent Democratic Rep. Gabe Vasquez. "Hello, New America, formerly New Mexico," Trump said at the top of the video.
Trump revived his earlier suggestion of renaming New Mexico "New America." The remarks have already stirred controversy in the state: Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and Democrats have said the state's name is not negotiable, while some Republicans dismissed it as a joke.
Early voting in New Mexico begins Tuesday, Oct. 7. The 2nd District, covering the southern part of the state, is one of the most competitive House districts in the country; Vasquez won re-election narrowly in 2024.
The New Mexico Democratic Party demanded the state GOP denounce Trump's renaming remarks; Republicans had not formally responded. The Cunningham campaign is treating Trump's endorsement as a major campaign asset.
