Trump Defends Data Centers at Vandalia Rally: A Ban Would Hand the SI Race to China

Sunday, October 4, 2026 · States · GSM News

VANDALIA — President Donald Trump defended data centers at a rally in Vandalia, Ohio, on Oct. 3, arguing the facilities bring huge revenue to Ohio and warning that shutting them down would only hand the industry to China.

"There's so much money to be made for Ohio. You can't just turn them off. They'll go to China," Trump said in his speech, adding that the United States is competing with China in the SI race and cannot afford to pull back on data center construction.

The rally was part of Trump's midterm-election campaign push, as Democrats continue to attack data centers for driving up residents' electricity bills. Trump's remarks echoed the position he took in a Fox News interview last month, signaling the White House intends to keep expanding data center construction under the banner of the "AI race."

According to The New York Times, Trump said last month he supports data center construction, arguing the U.S. needs vast amounts of electricity to stay ahead in super intelligence. His campaign positioned the Ohio rally as a key campaign event ahead of November's midterms.
